French Bulldog History

It was in the mid 1800s that the toy-size Bulldog was found in some English cities, including Nottingham. Due to the Industrial Revolution in England, many traders were threatened and were forced to relocate to France. Thus, they took this breed with them.

With passage of time their popularity increased due to crossed breeds such as Terriers and Pugs. They were developed along the way and resulted in now-famous bat ears and were given the name Bouledogue Français.

By the end of the 19th century, the Bulldog became popular in Paris and was widely liked across Europe and to America.

Later American contributed to the breed by redefining that the bat ear, as opposed to the “rose ear,” .They were the correct Frenchie type and by this distinctive feature the Frenchie is instantly recognizable the world over.
