Kanni Summary

The physic of Kanni is described with straight heads, strong jaws, golden eyes, black noses. They have ears that are medium-sized, flat, erect, dropping or semi dropping with semi curved tail with short coats.

Kanni can be found in coats that can be brown with black, fawn, light red to dark red, cream, and white, red with white or pale grey. Being blessed with straight top lines and tucked-up abdomens this medium sized dog breed has a lifespan of 14 to 16 years.

It has height at the withers is 64–74 centimeters (25–29 in) and weight ranges from 16–22 kilograms (35–49 lb). They use their excellent sense of smell and sight to hunt their prey by using their speed and endurance. They are trained to obey subtle hand signals of their masters while on the hunt and were specially bred for hunting Indian hares.

Kanni dogs have the key capability as a coursing dog as it hit speeds up to 60 km/h. They can be found in its light but muscular build, large heart, double suspension gallop, and extreme flexibility of its spine all like that of cheetah.

Kanni History

Widely found in the state of Tamil Nadu, the Kanni means Pure With is a rare South India breed. They are found around villages in the Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts.

The breed is used mainly for coursing. Being loyal and strong they are also known as the Maiden’s Beastmaster for its voracity.

Since its origin, Kanni were used to defend its territory against other wild animals. The native people often felt pride to gift this breed to newlywed brides as their guardians.
