Rajapalayam History

Rajapalayam town of Indian state of Tamil Nadu is named to be its native of this Indian dog breed. It was described and detailed by Major Edward N who wrote a book, the Scenes and Sports in Foreign Lands written in 1840.

In local language Rajapalayam breed was called as the Poligar Hound means a war dog. They used to protect farms and were known as the best companion of the farmers. Also, they accompanied farmers to hunt game for food.

In the 1980s, the Rajapalayam hound was the most popular in south Indian states because of its various qualities. It includes exceptional disease resistance, intelligence and loyalty.

But as the time passed and with the import of foreign dog breeds, there was a drastic decrease in the popularity of Rajapalayam Hound. Today, they are fighting for its survival as they are less in demand, and without help will disappear forever.

Kennel Club of India stepped forward to officially recognize and register Rajapalayam dogs. The efforts taken by them as dog enthusiasts, the Government of Tamil Nadu, this dog is making a strong comeback again.
